-
Spain: 4-3-3 in possession & 4-4-2 out of possession

Estonia Observations
In Possession
-
Overall, it was difficult to properly assess as Estonia had very few possession spells, attacks or counterattacks
-
One recurring team behaviour was that they always set-up to play out from their GK - either trying to play out short to bait and play through the press or go over the press towards the forward line
-
Neither approach was successful, generally losing the ball in their own half or 1st / 2nd contact when going long
-
During their very minimal periods of settled possession they often circulated possession in front of the Spain high/mid-block amongst their back three and at least two central midfielders, with five players in advanced areas (WBs providing width, two CFs and advanced CM centrally)
-
The issue for Estonia was that the distances between these two 'groups' of five were so large they were unable to successfully link possession from back-to-front and resorted to longer distanced passes forward where they were also outnumbered to win second balls
Out of Possession
-
5-3-2 mid / low block
-
Midfield and forward lines were continually required to shift across the pitch to maintain defensive compactness and prevent Spain exploiting the wide areas - a common weakness of a 5-3-2 defensive system
-
With Spain consistently looking to create wide attacking situations (through 1v1s and combinations), Estonia's wingbacks were forced into repeated defensive actions against superior technical and physical opponents
Players
-
No notes on Estonia players as Spain dominated possession (over 70%) and controlled the game for long periods
-
Limited opportunities to assess Estonia players in possession or attacking situations
-
All players worked tirelessly in their 5-3-2 defensive structure, but Spain proved superior technically, tactically and physically
Spain Observations
In Possession
-
Formed 'typical Spain' 4-3-3 structure
-
Full-backs positioned deeper in build-up, a single pivot, two advanced central midfielders operating between the lines, wide wingers and a central striker
-
Dominated possession with long spells of circulation across their backline who were rarely under any pressure and therefore had time to identify and play forward passes
-
Progressed play through a mixture of line-breaking passes, aerial diagonals and direct passes into the wide players
-
Frequent use of wide triangles, positional rotations and combination play to progress through the thirds and create chances
-
Both wingers were heavily involved in chance creation:
-
#7 (RW) regularly received to feet before driving diagonally inside to combine, create or shoot
-
#20 (LW) threatened both inside and outside, providing more attacking variety on the LW
-
-
A common progression / attacking pattern involved circulating possession across the backline before finding the RW, who drove inside to draw opponents towards him before play was switched to the left-hand (weak) side to exploit the space created - both the first and second goals came from this type of pattern
Out of Possession
-
Defended in a 4-4-2 (high / mid) - #10 advanced alongside the striker to lead the first line of pressure
-
Adopted aggressive starting positions from Estonia goal-kicks, looking to press high and force turnovers
-
High press frequently forced Estonia into difficult passes up the touchline, to a receiver facing his own goal, creating opportunities to anticipate, intercept and reinitiate attacking pressure
-
Effective rest defence limited Estonia's opportunities to counterattack, with Spain consistently regaining second balls and loose possession to maintain territorial control
Players
-
#1 (GK) - Darlington Osuchukwu
-
No notes
-
-
#12 (RB) - Arnau Cases
-
No significant notes
-
Regularly supported attacks on the right through overlaps and underlaps, providing passing options for #7
-
Primarily performed a supporting role, creating space and angles for #7 to isolate his full-back in 1v1 situations
-
10:30: Delivered a cross from the right following an overlapping run
-
-
#15 (RCB) - Jorge Domínguez
-
Circulated possession across the backline, regularly switched play and attempted line-breaking passes, although under minimal pressure so time to identify and play forward passes
-
Occasionally carried the ball forward into midfield when space ahead to exploit
-
Won several aerial duels
-
15:01: Initiated the move leading to the opening goal by finding the RW from the backline
-
25:40: Played a line-breaking pass into #10 between the lines (right half-space pocket)

-
-
#5 (LCB) - Sergi Mayans
-
Left-footed
-
Circulated possession across the backline, although under minimal pressure so allowed time to select and execute passes
-
Completed two successful aerial diagonal switches to the right wing during the 1st half, with another successfully completed but a mishit (found a teammate but it was aimed for another)
-
29:36: Scored 2-0 goal with a deflected shot from distance after joining the attack to offer weak-side switch option on left
-
-
#18 (LB) - Mikel Urrestarazu
-
Left-footed
-
Regularly supported and involved in LW attacks - overlaps and underlaps, combination play, positional rotations with #8 and #20, deep outswinging crosses towards far-post from half-space (mixed success)
-
Willingness to attack opponent 1v1 when opportunity presents e.g. when most advanced or isolated on LW (mixed success)
-
OOP: Repeatedly anticipated Estonia's line passes during Spain's high press, stepping in to regain possession. Estonia's build-up predictability and quality a factor but intensity and timing were effective in executing
-
Scored 1-0 goal: Shot from distance after joining the attack to offer weak-side switch option on left
-
05:17: example of attacking support and involvement to generate LW attack and deliver cross into the box
-
46:30: example of overlap and underlap runs
-
-
#16 (DM) - Cherif Fofana
-
Consistently offered a passing option during build-up to connect the defence and midfield
-
Generally played with minimal touches, keeping possession moving through simple, secure passes
-
Frequently collected second balls following clearances and aerial duels
-
Rest defence positional-sense and mobility enabled him to react quickly in defensive transitions to intercept and regain (defensive duel) possession, sustaining attacking pressure
-
Supported attacks in final 3rd, positioned around the edge of the box for cutbacks or long-range shots
-
-
#10 (RCM) - Ebrima Tunkara
-
Left-footed
-
Consistently positioned himself between Estonia's midfield and defensive lines to receive line-breaking passes
-
Manipulated the ball well in tight spaces before combining with nearby teammates (one-twos)
-
25:40: Received a line-breaking pass between the lines before progressing the attack
-
47:30: Received between the lines, manipulated the ball under pressure and won the penalty
-
48:50: Converted the penalty to make it 4-1
-
Covered ground well out of possession and recovered quickly into Spain's defensive structure
-
Box presence and attacked aerial deliveries in the penalty area, although heading appears a development area
-
Corner taker (dead ball delivery indicator)
-
Composure, creative and penetration in final 3rd:
-
19:10: disguised lofted pass over the defensive line for teammate to shoot inside the box
-
-
- #8 (LCM) - Mauro Valeiro
-
1st Half:
-
Typically occupied pockets between Estonia's midfield and defensive lines on the left side
-
Combined effectively within Spain's left-sided triangle alongside #18 and #20
-
Played more of a support role with his positioning and off-ball movement occupying opponents and creating space and passing options for teammates
-
-
2nd Half:
-
Following switch to RCM he had more touches and showcased more of his technical and creative ability e.g. wider passing range, one-touch play, combinations, dribbling, deception
-
64:40: received between the lines, played disguised one-touch line-breaking pass
-
69:03: Close control in a congested area to protect the ball before disguised reverse pass to penetrate the defensive line
-
73:30: Separation movements to receive in space in final 3rd, combination play (bounce pass) on edge of the area, quick feet and body feints to dribble inside the box before winning a corner
-
-
-
#7 (RW) - Ruben Gomez
-
Spain consistently looked to find him early in possession, particularly in isolated wide situations on RW (indicator of 1v1 ability)
-
Regularly received to feet on right wing before driving diagonally inside onto his stronger left foot to dribble, combine, create (penetrating pass) or shoot
-
Frequently used body feints and quick turns to create separation before driving inside
-
Consistently generated attacking output after receiving possession (dribbles, forward passes, shots)
-
Protected possession despite his smaller size by using his body effectively (shielding whilst static) + ability to ride challenges on the move. Quality of opponent a possible factor?
-
Generated several shooting opportunities individually and through combinations, although his shooting / finishing lacked quality e.g. power and accuracy. Development area?
-
07:02: Received to feet on RW touchline, bypassed immediate pressure with 1st touch before riding back pressure, show ball manipulation on the dribble to evade a sliding tackle before weak shot straight down the middle
-
15:01: Received from #15 before driving inside to initiate the move leading to Spain's opening goal
-
28:26: Combined effectively on the right side to progress the attack
-
64:20: Received on the RW, drove inside on 1st touch before diagonal dribble to setup own shot (powerful but always rising)
-
1st Half - predominantly received the ball wide. 2nd Half - received more inside
-
-
#20 (LW) - Christian Imga
-
Right-footed appeared strongest but willing and able to use left
-
Frequently received possession in isolated wide areas and threatened both inside and outside on LW
-
Regularly attacked defenders 1v1 before combining with supporting teammates
-
Used his physicality to protect possession and drive beyond opponents
-
Frequently manipulated the ball with stop-start movements and dribbling, using quick changes of direction and speed to beat defenders e.g. drawing opponents close or to a standstill before accelerating past
-
Provided an aerial outlet for longer passes into the forward line
-
12:40: attacked FB on outside
-
34:10: separation movement
-
Early 2nd Half: quick shift and shot on left-foot
-
52:30: generates own shooting opportunity after a carry inside from the LW
-
-
#9 (CF) - Enzo Alves (Captain)
-
Limited involvement during the opening stages, largely remaining central and occupying Estonia's centre-backs
-
OOP: Applied pressure on the ball in the forward line
-
Missed several goalscoring opportunities (a number were headed chances from close-range) but consistently arrived in high value goalscoring locations
-
Scored 3rd goal. Reacted quickest (already on the move) to deflected pass through the defensive line before dinking over the oncoming GK. Action unfolded quickly in tight area, so reacted and executed quickly under pressure.
-
A few instances of willingness and ability to link up play with flicks, one-touch passes with the advanced midfielders and wingers when coming inside
-
26:35: offered depth option with a run in behind
-
-
Substitutions:
-
#17 (Joaquin Sánchez) on for #20: Combined well on the LW, particularly with #8. At 57:51, combination play created a close-range shooting opportunity.
-
#14 on for #16: No notes
-
#4 on for #5: No notes
-
#6 on for #10: No notes
-
#11 on for #7: No notes
