Belgium Observations

In Possession

  • 4-2-3-1 shape, occasionally switching into a 4-1-5 with LCM pulling into LB slot and LB advancing & LW infield

  • FBs provide attacking support in final 3rd, looking to combine with winger and offer overlaps / underlaps

  • CMs typically stay behind the ball, offering recycle support and rest defence cover

  • Main attacking tactic was finding the wingers (#10 and #7) to feet, where they would dribble (typically infield) to look for combinations, penetrative passes, inswinging crosses, switches of play, and shooting opportunities

  • Majority of possession was in own third / half, with the double pivot (#6 and #8) focussed on retaining possession with short link passes with the backline

  • Minimal attacking output, creating only three attempts on goal

  • Goals:

    • 1-0 (24th min): Came from combination play on LW involving #2 and #8 before pass in behind for #17 who cutback for #7 who scored after lots of touches and turns inside the box

    • 2-0 (52nd min): Came from a long ball forward from GK. France CB (#4) misjudged headed clearance with the ball flicking off his head and landing in behind for #9 (who made a run beyond) to receive and lob the GK who was caught in no-man's land

France Observations

In Possession

  • 4-2-3-1 shaped maintain across build-up and final 3rd

  • FBs joined attacks in final 3rd, looking to combine with wingers to create crossing opportunities

  • In CM, typically #8 more B2B and #17 deeper, with #10 the most advanced, operating between the lines and orientated more towards the left-hand side

  • 1st Half:

    • Lots of circulation around the backline, as Denmark content to sit in mid-low block after taking the lead

    • Main progression and chance creation came from wide areas, with FB and winger combos

    • Lacked quality in the final 3rd (penetrative passes, crosses and shots)

    • #17, #8, #10 had lesser influence in possession / attacking play compared to previous games

    • 11:17: x1 instance of effective one-touch combination play to progress into the final 3rd and create a crossing opportunity involving #11, #5, #17 and #10. Referenced as this collective one-touch combination ability was displayed in previous games too

  • 2nd Half:

    • Possession share and goalscoring threat continued to increase

    • Wide areas continued to be the most utilised and threatening progression / chance creation tactic

    • France goal came from a #2 RW cross and #11 close-range far-post header

Out of Possession

  • Predominantly 4-4-2 mid-block

  • Attempted to apply pressure on the ball from this phase but lacked any real intensity

  • Poor defending for both Belgium goals:

    • 1-0: Lots of bodies inside the box and around #7 but no tackle despite lots of turns and touches
    • 2-0: #4 misjudged headed clearance of a long ball forward, with the ball skimming off his head (arguably slight misfortune) and in behind, allowing Belgium a 1v1 with the GK who was caught in no man's land e.g. not advanced enough to sweep and too far out of his goal, making the lob the obvious and highly achievable finish
